About smart-translator

Founded in Massapequa in 2016. Built on one idea: the translator has to know the subject matter, not just the language.

Our story

We fixed the problem that other agencies did not acknowledge.

smart-translator was built in 2016 after seeing the same failure pattern repeat itself across multiple industries: a translation agency assigns work based on language pair availability, not professional alignment. A mechanical engineering specification goes to a translator with a literature degree. A commercial contract goes to someone who has never worked in a legal or business environment. The output is grammatically correct and professionally inadequate.

The matching problem seemed so basic that it was hard to understand why agencies were not solving it. The answer, it turned out, was that solving it is harder. You need a translator network that is organized by professional background, not just language pair. You need sourcing processes that verify credentials, not just fluency. And you need the discipline to decline work when the right specialist is not available, rather than assigning whoever is closest.

We built that system and have operated it since 2016. Today our active translator network covers over 50 language pairs, organized by professional background across law, pharmaceutical, engineering, finance, publishing, and digital media. Every project goes to a translator whose career overlaps with the content. Every time.

Our values

Three things we will not negotiate on

Specialist matching, always

Every project is matched to a translator whose professional background fits the content. This is not a best-practice. It is a structural requirement of how we operate. We do not use someone with a general background for specialist content regardless of deadline or cost pressure.

Native language only

Every translator produces work in their native language. A German-to-English translation is produced by a native English speaker. A Spanish-to-English translation is produced by a native English speaker. The quality of non-native output, regardless of fluency level, cannot match native output in professional contexts.

Fixed prices, no estimates

We give one price before work begins and that number does not change. If our initial assessment of a project needs to be revised after closer review, we tell you before any payment is taken. We have not issued a surprise invoice since 2016.
